April 2003
As part of the 2003 ASCE VA's Student Conference, Precision Measurements, Inc. served
as both the facilitator of the event and the judge for the event.
Precision Measurements, Inc. prepared the survey baseline for the survey competition
field exercise on April 16, 2003. The survey baseline consisted of fixed points, from
which measurements were to be taken.
The morning of April 18, 2003 looked bleak. Tidewater often has what locals call
a North-Easter, which can include misting rain to heavy rain with strong winds and surf.
The judges, a Surveyor from PMI's Va Beach Branch and their Business Development Director Angelica Ceron, met with
the students from the seven competing colleges and a vote was taken concerning the
competition, whether to undertake the field exercises or stay inside and undertake a survey
math competition. The students decided to work the field exercise.

The seven teams moved out to the survey baseline and began the field exercise. The teams
were required to measure the horizontal distances of all the survey base line points, the
exterior angles of the closed polygon, two fixed elevation points and a remote elevation
on the top of a power pole.
The competition was fierce, but the sportsmanship of the teams was evident with the sharing
of equipment between teams. The weather turned dismal, but the teams went the distance and
completed the course.
The field exercises concluded and the exercise papers were turned in for review
and examination. The exercise was scored by a weighted comparison with Precision
Measurements, Inc. measurements for the course and the top three rankings were as follows:
First Place- West Virginia University
Second Place- Virginia Military Institute
Third Place- Bluefield State College
